What is a Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound?
Dolby 5.1 surround sound is a standardised audio format that uses five full-range speakers and a dedicated subwoofer to create a multi-directional sound experience. It is widely used in home theatres, cinemas, and streaming platforms to enhance the listening experience.
What devices might not give the full Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound experience?
Some devices may not fully support Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound and will instead downmix the audio to stereo. Here’s a breakdown:
Web Browsers:
- Chrome, Edge, and Firefox: Do not support Dolby Digital Plus and will output stereo audio.
- Safari: Supports Dolby 5.1.
Mobile & Tablet Devices:
- Typically have stereo speakers and will downmix 5.1 to stereo. However, this still enhances audio quality compared to standard stereo.
Living Room Devices:
- Devices with only inbuilt stereo speakers will downmix 5.1 to stereo unless connected to a 5.1-capable system. The downmix still provides improved audio over traditional stereo.
Smooth Streaming Devices:
These devices will receive stereo audio. Examples:
- Samsung Tizen TVs operating Tizen OS 2.4 or lower.
- LG WebOS TVs operating WebOS 4.x or lower.
- Panasonic SDkv2 TVs (models earlier than 2017).
- Roku Devices.
- PlayStation 4 Devices.
- Fire TV Stick Gen 1.
- Some Telco Set Top Boxes.
Internet Requirements
We recommend an internet connection speed of at least 16 megabits per second.
How do I know if an event supports Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound?
If you have a Dolby 5.1 capable system and a subscription plan that supports streaming NFL events, you will see a Dolby 5.1 icon next to their description as shown in the below figure.
